Based on an initial review of the U.S. Department of Education's plan for reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, it appears that despite some promising rhetoric, this blueprint places 100 percent of the responsibility on teachers and gives them zero percent authority, AFT president Randi Weingarten says.

The new standards released on March 10 by the Common Core State Standards Initiative represent the best effort so far to transform today's patchwork quilt of 50 sets of state standards into one set of strong, consistent expectations for what all students should know and learn, AFT president Randi Weingarten says.

From the Desk of the President

Our AFT efforts have resulted in many improvements in education over the years but there is still so much more to do. We are all dedicated professionals in our careers. Many administrators respect that but professional standards are lacking in too many areas of the state. This must change if we are to attract the best quality personnel for our students. We are a proud union and I am proud to be your president. I look forward to meeting with members across the state to get first hand information on what is needed in their school district.
-- New AFT Mississippi President Nancy Kent, long-time union activist and nationally recognized AFT organizer, is committed to raising professional standards for all public school employees and students.

May this holiday season bring with it many blessings and joy for you and those you hold dear. May the New Year be filled with happiness and success.
Sincerely,
Your AFT Mississippi Family
